Enliven Positive Ageing Services

By the middle of the century, people aged over 65 will represent one quarter of all New Zealanders. An ageing population brings several challenges. Older people face complex lifestyle questions and so do the communities of which they are a part.

Presbyterian Support Northern is committed to helping older people maintain dignity and quality of life. Based on a positive ageing philosophy and restorative model of service, Enliven is leading the way in the care of older people.

Each year Enliven enables several thousand older people to remain living in their own homes. Our staff partner with clients to provide home support based on the needs of each individual. They offer practical day-to-day help along with emotional support and encouragement that can make such a difference to an older person.

All our Enliven services recognise that some things make for a healthier, happy life, no matter what your age:

  • A sense of community
  • Friends, family, whanau - people you love who love you back
  • Being able to give and to receive
  • A home of your own choosing
  • Being able to make good decisions for yourself

Our Services

Home-based support services:

Enliven’s key support workers partner with older people who have been referred by the local Needs Assessment and Service Co-ordination (NASC) agency to develop a plan that meets their goals. Services provided in the home may include:

  • Rehabilitation – regaining skills, mobility, confidence
  • Support with household tasks
  • Physical exercises based on daily activities
  • Personal care
  • Social opportunities
  • Respite care
  • Liaison with doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

Homelink:

This new initiative on Auckland’s North Shore reconnects isolated older people with their communities. It helps restore confidence and a positive outlook on life. Older people are supported to re-build social and community connections. The Homelink Coordinator works with the older person to develop a plan and encourages them to be active and interested, maintain their skills and confidence, and stay in touch with others. Find out more about Homelink here.

Day programmes:

These provide opportunity for social interaction, activities and outings based on older people’s interests. Meals and transport can be provided. Enliven has two day programmes operating in Hamilton and Whakatane.

Pool programme:

In Tauranga, Enliven links with occupational therapists and other support people to offer exercise programmes at the local swimming pool.

Transition programme:

This helps older people return to independent living in their own homes after a short period in hospital or a rest home. It is presently available in Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua and Taupo.
